WAPA’s veterans ERG kicks off with first gathering, focus on disability benefits

WAPA’s Veterans Employee Resource Group, launched earlier this year, provides resources and events to educate and support our veteran workforce. A recent guest speaker presentation took a significant step in furthering that mission, ensuring veteran employees are equipped with the information and assistance needed to navigate the Veterans Affairs disability benefits system effectively.

On Oct. 3, the Veterans ERG hosted special guest Taylor Wikum from Berry Law, an organization renowned for its expertise in assisting veterans with claims and appeals. Taylor’s presentation provided attendees with valuable insights into navigating the often-complicated process of securing VA disability compensation.

Taylor began the session with an overview of VA disability compensation, a program that offers tax-free monthly payments to veterans who suffer from conditions linked to their military service. He explained how veterans can qualify for these benefits, whether by proving a direct service connection, establishing a secondary connection to an existing service-related condition or qualifying under presumptive service rules.

This helped demystify some of the more challenging aspects of filing a claim, including what types of evidence are needed and how the VA determines disability ratings.

The presentation also covered a wide range of conditions that can be claimed under the VA disability compensation program. Taylor outlined common musculoskeletal issues, such as knee and back injuries, which many veterans experience due to the physical demands of service. He also addressed mental health conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, as well as respiratory conditions, heart issues and neurological disorders. This comprehensive overview helped WAPA employees better understand the diverse health concerns that can be service-connected, and it highlighted the VA’s broad scope of support.

Taylor’s discussion extended to the step-by-step claims process, including the evidence gathering phase, submission requirements, and what to expect during the VA’s development and decision-making stages. He offered practical advice on submitting claims that maximize the likelihood of approval, such as providing thorough medical documentation and securing supporting statements from doctors. For those whose claims are initially denied or receive a lower-than-expected rating, he walked through the appeals process, underscoring the importance of perseverance and thorough preparation.

A key takeaway from the event was the accessibility of support for veterans facing challenges with the claims or appeals process. Taylor introduced the services provided by Berry Law, including their advocacy for veterans at various stages of their disability claims. He shared that Berry Law offers assistance starting from the initial claim, continuing through to appeals if needed. He emphasized the firm’s commitment to veterans, explaining that they work on a contingency basis, meaning they only collect a fee if the veteran’s claim is approved and back pay is awarded.

The presentation also offered guidance on other available resources for veterans seeking assistance with filing claims. In addition to Berry Law, Taylor recommended working with a Veterans Service Officer or filing claims independently on the VA’s website. These options provide veterans multiple avenues to access the benefits they’ve earned.

Hosting this event during October, which coincides with National Disability Employment Awareness Month, provided an ideal opportunity to emphasize the importance of supporting employees with service-connected disabilities. The session underscored WAPA’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment where veterans feel empowered to seek the benefits they deserve and know that support is available.
