WAPA honors 2024 ESA winner Joe Mayfield

Joe Mayfield: A leader who drives WAPA’s success 

Joe Mayfield is a respected leader at WAPA. As the Upper Great Plains Transmission Scheduling and Switching Manager, he is known for his strong technical skills and self-driven nature. Mayfield has significantly leveraged his expertise in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition and Cyber Security and has worked with the UGP Energy Management System. Throughout his career, he has held important positions such as SCADA manager, cyber security lead, real-time engineer and technical writer for Operations.  

Mayfield’s deep understanding of SCADA, Information Technology and Inter-control Center Communications Protocol data has been crucial to his success as an RTE and technical writer. His positive attitude and collaborative spirit have inspired cross-regional teamwork and strengthened his performance and relationships within WAPA. His leadership on the Common SCADA project has been a beacon of inspiration, ensuring timely completion and fostering a sense of unity across regions.  

One of Mayfield’s notable achievements is developing a checkout process that eliminates the need to involve substation field crews. This innovation has saved WAPA significant time and resources, making UGP the only region to complete this project on schedule. Mayfield is recognized for his expertise in power systems and control room operations and consistently demonstrates initiative, excellent judgment and strong interpersonal skills. His dedication to producing high-quality outcomes has made him an exceptional asset on every project, contributing to WAPA’s continued success and providing inspiration to his colleagues.
