EDAM Activities

Sierra Nevada (SN) is exploring participation in the California Independent System Operator’s  (CAISO) Extended Day Ahead Market (EDAM). The EDAM is a day-ahead electricity market designed to align supply and forecasted demand across the EDAM footprint and identify economic transfers between participants. SN already participates in the CAISO Western Energy Imbalance Market, focused on real-time transactions.

On Oct. 30, 2024, WAPA announced that SN will pursue final negotiations toward full participation in EDAM. SN and the Balancing Authority of Northern California, which SN operates within, join utilities including the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, PacifiCorp and Portland General Electric that have announced their intent to participate in CAISO’s EDAM.

Joining EDAM will allow SN to keep pace with industry changes and ensure the reliable delivery of hydropower while adjusting to a changing energy mix. Further information on the rationale to join the EDAM is available in a SN EDAM Recommendation Memo (PDF – 376KB).

Between September 2023 and August 2024, SN held six customer meetings to discuss key issues and respond to customer and stakeholder questions. The documents from this informal stakeholder process are posted below.
