LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Western Area Power Administration has been ranked in the top quartile of best places to work in the federal government based on results from a government-wide employee survey.
“This news is not surprising to me,” said Administrator and CEO Mark A. Gabriel. “I have known since day one that we have the best people working here for the best mission in government: supplying millions of Americans with affordable, clean and renewable hydropower.”
Gabriel attributes the success to using the results from the annual Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey, which is the basis of the ranking, to inform decisions about WAPA, the organizational culture and meeting employee needs. Among other improvements, WAPA has implemented several changes based on survey results, including:
- Refreshing the organization’s core values
- Maxiflex to increase flexibility in employee work schedules
- Telework to allow for a resilient and result-oriented workforce
- Increased transparency and access to highest levels of leadership
- Forming an Extended Leadership Team to improve alignment and communication up and down the organization
- Increased senior manager visits to field sites
- Increased use of collaborative, cross regional, cross functional project teams
The FEVS measures employee perception and opinions related to a number of indices, including:
- Employee engagement
- Global satisfaction
- New Inclusion Quotient
- Workplace safety
- Creativity and innovation
- Effective communications
- Training and development
WAPA’s scores across all indices have increased for the past five consecutive years.
