DISPATCH TRAINING SIMULATOR
The Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) simulates four interconnected control areas simultaneously. Each control area has its own ACE calculation utilizing its tie lines scheduled interchange and system frequency.
Like a real power system, the schedules and generation can be manipulated to control each area within normal operating parameters. Voltage levels can also be changed by the use of common controllable devices such as tap changers, reactive devices, and generator excitation. In addition, the system contains several phase shifting transformers.
Four additional interconnected control areas are included in the model and are manipulated by the instructor to create external influence for the students. Each control area has 12 substations and generation stations. The generation stations are a variety of thermal, hydro, and combustion turbine types to simulate the mix in the real world.
Like most SCADA/EMS systems, the DTS calculates data every 4 seconds. A variety of scenarios have been installed to place the student into both routine operations and those situations seldom experienced. The basic principal of system separation, islanding, and subsequent restoration is practiced by the student. During these sessions students discover, by normal analog values as well as communication with neighboring control areas, what it is to experience and recognize islands. The sessions can be paused and replayed at any time by the instructor to reinforce the concepts necessary for the student to be successful in the restoration process.
