When did you start working with WAPA? I started working with WAPA back in 2006 as a contractor in the mailroom and also assisted with the front desk. In 2007, I took on the role as a student in the Safety office. After my program completion there was an opening; I applied and was hired as a full-time safety specialist.
What is the most interesting thing you have worked on at WAPA?Wow, this is a tough one. One thing about being in Safety is that things may change daily! If I had to narrow it down to one thing, it would be assisting former Safety Specialist Kris Kendall in a 2009 motor vehicle accident here at DSW. Being new to the safety world it was an eye opener. Although no one was hurt I was able to get a better understanding about safety.
What do you wish people understood about your job and the work you do? My job as a safety specialist is more than just having employees report injuries and providing craft employees with annual physical packets. Part of my role is researching industry standards and ensuring that employees are trained on the changes. I also play a vital role on DSW's Safety Committee, providing support and guidance to help the committee and the DSW Safety Recognition Program. We in the Safety office support both craft and office employees, ensuring that each and every one returns to their friends, family or loved ones safely.
Tell us something about yourself we wouldn't find on your resume. I am southern girl from Louisiana that values my husband and two kids more than anything! We love to camp, take trips up north to play in the snow or just relax by watching a movie in the comfort of our home.
How is what you do tied to WAPA's mission? For the mission to be carried out, employees must receive essential tools and training, and Safety must be at the forefront. I am very fortunate to receive guidance and motivation under my supervisor Troy Henry. He is a leader who gets it! Safety is paramount for all employees in and around WAPA. We work day to day to carry out that mission!
