BISMARCK, N.D. — Magic City Campus High School in Minot, North Dakota, took first place the 2019 North Dakota Regional Science Bowl competition Feb. 2, winning an all-expense-paid trip to compete at the Department of Energy National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. April 25-29. 

Students representing 19 high schools vied for the honor to represent North Dakota at the national competition. A full list of participating schools is below. 

Defending champions Bismarck Century High School came in second and Grand Forks Central took third place at the day-long event, which was held at the University of Mary, Gary Tharaldson School of Business, in Bismarck. The competition was sponsored by Western Area Power Administration and DOE.

“Congratulations to all the schools and students who competed at the Science Bowl today,” said WAPA employee and Science Bowl coordinator Tom Atkinson. “The National Science Bowl program encourages students to excel in mathematics and science and to pursue careers in these fields. The University of Mary played a large role in that today by inviting us all to compete on their campus, which we greatly appreciate.” 

The regional and national Science Bowl competitions require students to answer questions related to astronomy, biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, Earth science and general science in seconds. Each team is made up of four students, a student alternate and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach.
