Juneteenth Freedom Day

Honoring Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom and Community at WAPA

Today, we join the nation in commemorating Juneteenth, a day of profound significance in American history. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing news of the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of all enslaved people—two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. This day marked a pivotal moment of freedom and hope, a reminder of the enduring fight for equality and justice.

Recognizing the monumental significance of this event, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law on June 17, 2021, officially designating Juneteenth as a federal holiday. This act is a tribute to Black Americans’ struggles and achievements, underscoring the importance of reflection, education, and community in our journey toward a more equitable society.

At WAPA, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful workplace where diversity is accepted and celebrated. Juneteenth is not just a historical milestone but a moment to reaffirm our dedication to equity, diversity, and inclusion within our organization.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, we unite in our collective responsibility to uphold these values in our daily work. Together, we can continue to build a WAPA where everyone’s contributions are recognized and every voice is heard.

Join us in celebrating freedom, educating ourselves and others about our history, and supporting each other in creating a brighter, more inclusive future.

Thank you for your continued dedication to WAPA’s mission. Let’s take this opportunity to honor Juneteenth and the progress it represents.
