Western Area Power Administration (Western), a Federal agency, markets electricity generated by power plants operated by the Federal government. Growth in the Sacramento area continues to increase the demand on the area’s interconnected electrical transmission system. This demand is reducing the reliability and security of the power system, particularly during summer peak months. Western proposes to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) to address Western’s actions concerning the future voltage requirements of the Sacramento area. The EIS will describe the projected near-term voltage support requirements for a 100-mile radius around Sacramento, existing transmission lines bringing power into the Sacramento area, the potential for new transmission lines and/or system upgrades in the Sacramento area or other alternatives to alleviate the current shortfall in electrical service.
During the next 20 months, Western will implement a number of activities to encourage public participation in the Sacramento Area Voltage Support EIS. Western published a Notice of Intent in the August 8, 2000 issue of the Federal Register (Vol. 65, No. 153), announcing its intent to prepare an EIS and to hold public scoping meetings on the project. Meeting details:
You are cordially invited to attend and provide comments about what you would like to see included in the scope of the EIS.
A toll-free telephone hotline is available for individuals interested in the project and provides an economical means to:
The toll-free hotline is 1-877-913-4440.
Western also provides easy access to information about Western and the EIS process for internet users. The Voltage Support EIS website is updated periodically to include electronic versions of documents as they become available. It also provides links to other websites that may be of interest. Visit: www.wapa.gov and click on What’s New.
Western will also produce periodic EIS updates during the project. They will provide:
Western will maintain public reading rooms that will include informational materials related to the Voltage Support EIS. The reading rooms will be located in the Sacramento area. The exact location of these reading rooms will be posted on Western’s EIS web site and on the toll-free hotline. Documents that will be placed in the reading room once they become available include the EIS updates, Draft EIS and Final EIS.
Western is in the process of developing a mailing list of all individuals and organizations that would like to receive informational materials related to the Voltage Support EIS. If you would like to receive materials related to this Voltage Support EIS, please return the coupon attached to this flyer; call the toll-free telephone hotline or visit the internet website.
