15TH ANNUAL ARIZONA REGIONAL SCIENCE BOWL COMING FEB 21


PHOENIX, Ariz.—With the nation’s focus on energy independence and sustainability, it’s a great time to promote the benefits of science and math among high school youth. Western Area Power Administration is doing just that by hosting the 15th Annual Arizona Regional Science Bowl—a math and science competition for Arizona high school students,  Feb. 21 at Glendale Community College  at 9 a.m.

Twenty eight teams from thirteen schools will compete for the coveted  first place prize and a free trip to the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., held April 30 through May 5. The regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science, improve awareness of career options in science and technology and provide an avenue of enrichment and reward for academic science achievement.

Brophy Preparatory College, winner of the 2008 Arizona regional, will defend its title among the following participating schools:

Besides Western, sponsors associated with this year’s competition are Fry’s Marketplace, STMicroelectonics, Inc., Southwest Transmission Cooperative, Inc. from Benson, Ariz., Arizona Business Bank, K. R. Saline & Associates, PLC., Greater Phoenix Mensa, Glendale Community College  and private donors.

The Department of Energy first launched the competition in 1991to challenge the students’ knowledge of astronomy, biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, current events in the scientific community, and computer, earth and general sciences.

Western hosts regional Science Bowl competitions in Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Details on the Arizona Regional are on Western's Web site. More information can be found on the National Science Bowl Web site.

Registration of the students begins at 7 a.m., and then round robin competition starts at 9 a.m., and continues until noon. Lunch and then double eliminations run from 1 to  2:30 p.m., when the four final teams compete for first place.
