2009 BIG SKY REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE BOWL COMING FEB. 7, 2009


BILLINGS, Mont.—On Saturday, Feb. 7, high school students from across Montana will test their knowledge of science as they participate in the 2009 Big Sky Regional Science Bowl in Billings.

The winning team of this regional event receives an all-expenses-paid trip to participate in the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. The competition involves 22 teams from 14 schools and will be held at the Billings Hotel and Convention Center, 1223 Mullowney Lane, in Billings, Mont., starting at 8 a.m. Admission is free. The public is invited to watch the competition and support the teams. The fast-paced quiz format of the competition will challenge the students’ knowledge of astronomy, biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, as well as  earth and general sciences.

This is the 17th year for the Big Sky Regional Science Bowl, sponsored by the Western Area Power Administration and numerous business partners in the state, including PPL, St. Mary Land & Exploration, Society of Petroleum Engineers, IEEE, IBEW Local 532, HDR Engineering, HKM Engineering, Electrical Consultants, Inc., Upper Missouri G&T Electric Cooperative, Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative, Stillwater Mining Co.,Vans Evergreen IGA, Billings Federal Credit Union, Office Max, Creative Monograms, Great Frame Up, Borders Books, Tetra Tech, Eco Auto and Western Awards. The officials of this event are all volunteers from the community, including professors from the Science Departments of MSU-Billings and Rocky Mountain College, who serve as judges for the event.

Participating schools include:  Absarokee High in Absarokee; Billings Central Catholic High, Billings Skyview High, and Billings West High in Billings; C.M. Russell High in Great Falls; Conrad High in Conrad; Custer County High in Miles City;  Fergus High in Lewistown; Florence-Carlton High in Missoula; Havre High in Havre; Helena High in Helena;  Plentywood High in Plentywood;  Shelby High in Shelby; and White Sulphur Springs High in White Sulphur Springs.

The national competition will be held April 30 to May 4 and is sponsored by the Department of Energy and its partners. The regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science, improve awareness of career options in science and technology, and provide an avenue of enrichment and reward for academic science achievement.

MEDIA ADVISORY:
Morning competition is in a round-robin format. The teams with the most points will advance to the afternoon double-elimination tournament with the championship round set for about 4 p.m. The awards ceremony will follow immediately. Interviews with competing teams and their coaches will be available throughout the day. Media representatives are asked to check in at the Science Bowl Central desk.
