14TH ANNUAL PHOENIX SCIENCE, MATH COMPETITION COMING MARCH 1
LAKEWOOD, Colo.—Two Hopi Nation teams will vie with 13 other Arizona high schools to test their knowledge of the broad subject of science as they match wits during the 14th Annual Arizona Regional Science Bowl competition, March 1.
Thirty teams from 14 schools will strive for top honors at Glendale Community College, in Phoenix, beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is free, and registration begins at 7 a.m. The public is invited to watch the competition and support favorite teams.
The fast-paced quiz format will challenge student knowledge of astronomy, biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, current events in the scientific community, computer, earth and general sciences.
This year's all-day regional competition is sponsored by Western Area Power Administration, SRP, Salt River Project, Arizona Power Users' Association, Greater Phoenix Mensa, Glendale Community College, Safeway, Inc., University of Phoenix, Apollo Group, Inc., Irrigation & Electrical District Association of Arizona, Southwest Transmission Cooperative, K. R. Saline & Associates, PLC, Robert S. Lynch & Associates, Compass Bank, Fry's Marketplace, Southwest Gas Corp., and Top Banana Corp Promotion Specialists.

The winning team of this regional event receives an all-expense paid trip to participate in the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. The national competition will be held May 1 to 5 and is sponsored by the Department of Energy and its partners. The regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science, improve awareness of career options in science and technology and provide an avenue of enrichment and reward for academic science achievement.

MEDIA ADVISORY:
The morning competition is a round-robin format.
Teams with the most points will advance to the
afternoon double elimination tournament with the
quarter-finals at 2:30 p.m., semi-finals at 3 p.m.,
and the championship round set for about 3:30 or
4 p.m. The awards ceremony will follow immediately.
Interviews with competing teams and their coaches
will be available throughout the day.
