MIRA LOMA UPHOLDS SCIENCE BOWL WINNING STREAK
LAKEWOOD, Colo.—For five years in a row, a team from Mira Loma High School in Sacramento has taken top honors in the Sacramento Regional Science Bowl competition.
In fact, Mira Loma has won 12 regional competitions in the 17 years that Northern California high school students have matched wits on their knowledge of science.
On Feb. 24, Mira Loma team members Erik Chen, Anisha Deshmane, Joanna Nishimura, Akhil Sundararajan and Steven Wu, led by Coach Hill, vied with 23 other northern California teams in the 17th Annual Sacramento Regional Science Bowl, at Americano High School. Their prize: A trip to Washington, D.C., to compete with 65 other teams at the National Science Bowl, April 26 to 30.
"The trip to DC is always exciting and amazing in terms of the knowledge and competition," said Mira Loma Team Coach James Hill. "There is always an event-packed agenda prior to the competition, and then when the competition begins, the anticipation and excitement really begins. There are outstanding teams from all over the United States that compete at the National Science Bowl."
A team from Rio Americano High School in Sacramento took second place in the competition where students answered questions in astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, general/applied science, energy, mathematics and physics.
Major sponsors of this year's event include Western Area Power Administration, Sacramento Municipal Utility District and Northern California Power Agency.
"The students are enthusiastic and competitive in this event, which they look forward to all year long," said Western's Sierra Nevada Science Bowl Coordinator Cynthia Miller.
Western annually markets and transmits Federal hydropower from in 15 western and central states. Western is one of four DOE power marketing administrations. It hosts regional Science Bowl competitions in Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.
