WESTERN EARNS AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SAFETY PRACTICES

DENVER—Western Area Power Administration earned the American Public Power Association's 2005 Electric Utility Safety Award for safe operating practices. The agency earned an honorable mention in the category for utilities with one million worker-hours of annual worker exposure. William Gallagher, chairman of APPA's board of directors, presented the award today, during the association's annual Engineering and Operations Technical Conference, held in Sacramento, Calif.

"Public power entities pride themselves on safe operations in all facets of the community's electrical system," said Gallagher. "Earning this award shows that your organization cares deeply for the safety of local residents and businesses, as well as employees."

More than 250 organizations entered the annual contest. Entrants were judged on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses and the number of worker-hours during 2005, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

"We're pleased to be recognized with this national award," said Western's Safety and Security Manager Terry Dembrowski. "Western is proud of its safety record and will continue to provide a safe workplace for our employees."

The safety contest has been held annually since 1960. APPA represents more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community- and state-owned electric utilities.
