2006 REGIONAL SCIENCE BOWL SET FOR MARCH 4

PHOENIX —On March 4, high school students from across Arizona will test their knowledge of the broad subject of science as they participate in the 2006 Arizona Regional Science Bowl in Glendale.

The event featuring 32 teams from 16 schools will vie for top honors in the annual competition at Glendale Community College, starting at 8 a.m. Admission is free. The public is invited to watch the competition and support their favorite team.

The fast-paced quiz format of the competition will challenge student knowledge of astronomy, biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, current events in the scientific community, and computer, earth and general sciences. The winning team receives an all-expense paid trip to participate in the National Science Bowl in Washington, DC. This is the 12th year for the Arizona Regional Science Bowl, sponsored by Western Area Power Administration, other government agencies and business partners in the state.

• Bisbee High School, Bisbee, 2 teams
• Douglas High School, Douglas
• Fountain Hills High School, Fountain Hills, 2 teams
• Monument Valley High School, Kayenta
• Hopi High School, Keams Canyon, 2 teams
• Mountain View High School, Mesa, 3 teams
• Phoenix Country Day School, Paradise Valley, 3 teams
• Centennial High School, Peoria, 2 teams
• Brophy College Preparatory School, Phoenix, 3 teams
• Desert Vista High School, Phoenix, 2 teams
• North Canyon High School, Phoenix, 2 teams
• Chaparral High School , Scottsdale, 2 teams
• David Richardo School, Scottsdale
• Tempe Prep, Tempe, 3 teams
• AmeriSchools College Prep, Tucson, 2 teams
• Sabino High School, Tucson

The national competition will be held April 27 to May 1, and is sponsored by the Department of Energy and its partners. Details on the National Science Bowl can be found online at http://www.scied.science.doe.gov/nsb/default.htm.

The regional and national events encourage student involvement in math and science activities, improve awareness of career options in science and technology and provide an avenue of enrichment and reward for academic science achievement.

Western, a Department of Energy agency, annually markets and transmits Federal hydropower in 15 western and central states. It hosts regional Science Bowl competitions in Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

MEDIA ADVISORY:

Activities begin at 8 a.m. with a welcoming ceremony in the Math Building . Competition, in a round-robin format, begins at 9 a.m. in the High Tech Annex Building followed by a double-elimination tournament from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Quarter, semi-final and championship rounds follow immediately. Awards will be presented about 4 p.m. Interviews with competing teams and their coaches will be available throughout the day. Media are asked to check in at the Science Bowl registration desk.
