LAKEWOOD , Colo. — A high voltage substation in Phoenix appears to be a target for vandalism. Western Area Power Administration, which owns and operates the substation, is offering up to $1,000 for information that helps identify who is responsible for trespassing into the Pinnacle Peak Substation yard on Aug. 28.
While inside the substation yard, two trespassers took pictures of equipment. The substation is about 3 miles northeast of the Pima Freeway, Loop 101, in northern Phoenix. Pinnacle Peak serves Arizona Public Service, Salt River Project and the Central Arizona Water Conservation District.
Western officials asked for the assistance of the Phoenix Police Department and the local FBI to identify those committing vandalism at this substation, but still needs the public’s help. Witnesses can call toll free 1-800-209-8962 to report suspicious or criminal activities in strict confidence.
Damage to high-voltage substation equipment can create life-threatening hazards, cause fires and kill or injure people. “We need the help of the community to identify who was trying to break into this substation," said Western Security Officer Pam Moody. "If you see someone vandalizing high-voltage equipment, call local law enforcement officials or call Western's Crime Watch hotline. You may even be eligible for a reward."
Western's Crime Watch Program asks the public to help fight crime at its facilities to help reduce operations and maintenance costs. Help us keep the lights on by reporting crimes. For more information, visit www.wapa.gov/crime.
Western Area Power Administration annually markets and transmits more than 10,000 megawatts of power from hydroelectric powerplants owned and operated by the Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 15 western and central states. It is part of the Department of Energy.
