 11th Annual Science and Math Competition coming to Phoenix

 PHOENIX, Ariz. —High school students across Arizona will match intellects March 5, in the Arizona Regional Science Bowl competition at Glendale Community College.

Thirty two teams from 15 schools battle for top honors in the 11th annual round robin and double elimination competition as they answer questions in astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, general science, mathematics and physics. The winning team receives an all-expense paid trip to the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, April 28-May 2 in Washington, D.C.

“The students from the competing schools have been practicing throughout the school year and are eager to win and represent the region at the nationals,” said Science Bowl coordinator Dennis Schaefer.

“Teams as far away as Lake Havasu and Douglas come to compete. Competition is fierce. About 75 volunteers from the community have been trained as judges, moderators, time and scorekeepers Schaefer added.

Major sponsors of this year’s event include Western Area Power Administration, Southwest Airlines, K.R. Saline & Associates, PLC, Robert S. Lynch & Associates, Arizona Business Bank, Southwest Transmission Cooperative, Inc., SRP, Apollo Group, Inc., Greater Phoenix Mensa, Mazatzal Casino and Safeway Inc.

A welcoming ceremony is set for 8 a.m., with competitions beginning at 9 a.m.

 

MEDIA ADVISORY:

Round robin tournament play is from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Double elimination begins after lunch at 1 p.m. with the quarter, semi and championship rounds set for about 2:30, 3 and 3:30 p.m. The awards ceremony follows immediately. Interviews and photo opportunities with competing teams and their coaches are available throughout the day.
