13TH ANNUAL SCIENCE AND MATH COMPETITION COMING TO LOVELAND
LOVELAND, Colo.—High School students from the Rocky Mountain Region will match wits January 29, in the Rocky Mountain Region Science Bowl competition at Colorado State University.
Twenty-six teams from 17 schools will vie for top honors in the 13th annual round robin and double elimination competition as they answer questions in astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, general science, mathematics and physics. The winning team earns an all-expense paid trip to represent the Rocky Mountain Region in the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, April 28 to May 2 in Washington, D.C.
“The regional bowl brings together the best and brightest math and science students from this region for a day of fun-filled competition,” explained Science Bowl coordinator John Crowfoot from Western’s Rocky Mountain Regional office in Loveland.
“Many of our teams travel a long way to get to the regional. They’ve been practicing for months to have the honor of representing our region at the nationals. A team of 120 volunteers from across the community have also been preparing for the event,” he added. “We’ve trained judges, moderators, timers and other volunteers. We’re ready.”

Western annually markets and transmits Federal hydropower from in 15 western and central states. Western is one of four DOE power marketing administrations. It hosts regional Science Bowl competitions in Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota .

Round robin tournament play is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. followed by double elimination tournament up to the championship round set at about 6 p.m. The awards ceremony will immediately follow. Interviews and photo opportunities with competing teams and their coaches will be available throughout the day.
