REGIONAL SCIENCE COMPETITION
BISMARCK, N.D. – On Saturday, February 21, twenty-four high
school
teams will compete in the annual North
Dakota Regional Competition of the Department of Energy’s National
Science Bowl.
The students answer tough questions on scientific topics in astronomy,
biology,
chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth and general science. The teams are comprised of five students and
a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. The competition starts at
9:00
a.m. with a round
robin and in the afternoon the top eight
teams compete in a double elimination final round.
The questions are multiple choice and short
answer.
The winner of the Regional
Competition will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC on April 29 through May 3 to compete in the
National
Science Bowl. There they will
participate in a two-day competition against teams from all 50 states.
The National Science Bowl was
developed to encourage high school students from across the nation to
excel in
math and science and to pursue careers in those fields.
It provides the students, and teachers who
have prepared them, a forum to receive national recognition for their
talent
and hard work.
This
is an exciting event and a good media opportunity! The
final round of the competition will be
held at 3:30 p.m. Watching
the top two science teams in the State battle for the championship is
very
exciting! Winning this competition is as
much of an accomplishment for these students as winning any sports
tournament,
so we invite the media to attend and help showcase their efforts.
Attached
is a list of the teams that will be competing in this event. Detailed information about the Science Bowl
can be found at: http://www.scied.science.doe.gov.
