SCOTTSBLUFF RESIDENT RETIRES FROM FEDERAL SERVICE

Lakewood, Colo.—Scottsbluff resident Carl Nyquist, a foreman I electronic equipment craftsman at Western Area Power Administration's Gering Field Office, retires June 26 after 22 years of Federal government service.
 
        Nyquist joined Western in 1985 as an electronic equipment craftsman. He installed, maintained and replaced communication systems for 22 microwave sites, 13 substations, an extensive vehicle fleet and remote terminal units in parts of Colorado, South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming. Staff at Western's Gering Field Office operate and maintain 855 miles of high-voltage transmission lines, 13 high voltage substations and 22 communication facilities in a four-state area. The Gering office is one of 12 maintenance offices of Western's Rocky Mountain Region.
 
        Nyquist started his Federal career in the U.S. Navy in 1959 as a seaman, working in communications. After leaving the Navy as a petty officer, 2nd Class, he attended Chadron State College in Chadron.  He joined the United Telephone Company as a lineman and worked his way up to microwave technician before joining Western.  His career highlights were serving as president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Nos. 843 and 1759.
 
        A native of Alliance, Nyquist wants to spend more time farming and ranching in Chadron in his retirement.  He also plans to spend more time with his family, which includes his wife, two grown children and two grandchildren.  He also has his sights on flying his 1947 Piper Cub, which he rebuilt to original specifications.
 
        Western is an agency of the Department of Energy that markets and transmits hydroelectric power in 15 central and western states.
