FORT COLLINS, Colo.--A team of six students from Poudre High School in Fort Collins, Colo. took first place in the Department of Energys Rocky Mountain Regional Science Bowl competition Feb. 3 at Colorado State University. Team Captain Galen Pickard, and team members Corina Stark, Alicia Arevalos, Jeff Stout, Bryce LaKamp and Coach Jack Lundt will vie for honors at the all-expense paid annual National Science Bowl tournament May 4-7 in Washington, D.C.
Fairview High School Team Captain David Wolpoff of Fort Collins, Colo. led team members Robert Brown, Nick Bryner, Jenny Rood and Takashi Yoshida to second place victory under the direction of Coach Lynn Reed. Third place team members Daniel Santiago, Matt Anderson, Erin Mowbray and Pat Wheeler, from Loveland High School in Loveland, Colo., were led by Team Captain Bryan Lipinski and Coach Matt Nigro.
The U.S. Department of Energy, Western Area Power Administration and Western contractor SI-STA, sponsored the Saturday competition. Partners in this event included other Federal, state and local offices, community service organizations and many volunteers.
The Science Bowl is a tournament-style academic competition designed to challenge and recognize students' knowledge in science and mathematics. Students answer questions in the categories of astronomy, biology, physics, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, earth science and general science in both round robin and double elimination formats.
