GOLDEN, Colo.-Western Area Power Administration's Small Business Program won the Department of Energy's Small Business Award for Fiscal Year 1998.
The award was presented by DOE's Deputy Energy Secretary T.J. Glauthier at a ceremony June 9 in Washington, D.C.
Judy Madsen, Western's Small Business Program manager, said DOE presented the award to Western because the agency met or exceeded its goals in awarding contracts for products and services to small businesses. Through these awards, Western's overall economic impact to communities was $43.1 million regionwide.
Western met or exceeded its goals in the following categories: small businesses-projected 60 percent, actual 81.5 percent; small business set-asides-projected 15.4 percent, actual 30 percent; small disadvantaged businesses-projected 2 percent, actual 7 percent; and women-owned businesses-projected 5 percent, actual 5 percent.
Western is part of the U.S. Department of Energy. It annually markets and transmits more than 10,000 megawatts of power from plants owned and operated by the Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 15 central and western states.
