GOLDEN, Colo - For supporting public education in South Dakota, Western Area Power Administration
employees in Huron were recognized with a Community Service Award Sept. 13 by the Associated School
Boards of South Dakota. The award was given to acknowledge sponsorship of the Dakota Regional Science
Bowl for the past six years.
The Huron School District, with the endorsement of five other school districts, nominated Western for the
award.
Accepting the award for Huron were the co-coordinators for the 2000 South Dakota Science Bowl, Carol
Milbrandt, an engineering technician, and Lesley Berg, an electrical engineer. They accepted the award at the
Huron School Board meeting Sept. 13.
The Huron Office, which includes South Dakota Maintenance, Upper Great Plains Maintenance Engineering
and Upper Great Plains Construction, has hosted the Science Bowl since 1994. Too numerous to mention by
name, employees have volunteered as committee members, set-up crews, moderators, scorekeepers, scientific
judges, timekeepers and rules judges. They have also volunteered by assisting with drafting and clerical work.
"(Western)'s help has been integral to the success of the science bowl," said Gene Enck, executive director of
the Associated School Boards of South Dakota.
