GOLDEN, Colo.-Western Area Power Administration employees participated in the nationwide Y2K drill Sept. 8 and 9 at its Corporate Services Office here, dispatch centers and at critical substations and electrical facilities across its transmission system.
No Y2K-related problems were experienced. Western initiated a number of drill scenarios to test operational procedures and communication procedures within our own organization and within our control areas. All back-up plans worked effectively.
Western also responded to drill events injected by NERC reliability regions. The exercise gave participants an opportunity to test their responses to a wide variety of simulated incidents ranging from bomb threats, severe weather, and national media inquiries to generation and transmission losses that resulted in islanding-or the breakup of the interconnected transmission system into smaller segments-and load-shedding procedures to restore the interconnected transmission system to its normal operating configuration.
