On Saturday, January 30, local high school students will tackle tough questions like this one with hopes of winning a spot at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl Tournament in May. The Sacramento regional competition, being held on Super Science Bowl Saturday, will host 25 teams composed of five students each. Dave Bender, KOVR Channel 13 meteorologist, will address the 25 teams during the opening ceremony of the Sacramento Regional Science Bowl competition being held on Super Science Bowl Saturday.

"The Department of Energy developed the Science Bowl® to encourage high school students from across the nation to excel in math and science and to pursue careers in those fields," said U.S. Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson. "These competitions provide a forum for students and teachers to receive national recognition for their talent and hard work in science and math."

The Regional Science Bowl competition will test the students' knowledge of astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, earth, computer and general science. The first place winner of Saturday's tournament will join 52 other high school teams from across the country competing for the title of 1999 U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl Champions.
