Western customers plan for 2005 Public Power Week

There are as many different ways to celebrate Public Power Week as there are utilities. The following are some of the activities that Western customers have planned for the week of October 2 through 8.

  • The Arizona Municipal Power Users’ Association annually passes a resolution recognizing the event and asks the governor to proclaim the first week in October Public Power Week in Arizona. The association plans a photo opportunity with the governor at the proclamation signing.
  • The city of Auburn, Neb. is having its annual Public Power open house and employee recognition on Oct. 5 at the Board of Public Works Main Office.
  • Burbank Water and Power will donate books to the city’s public libraries on electricity and renewable energy.
  • For the past five years, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has set up booths at three shopping malls to meet with customers, provide safety demonstrations and hand out program and service information. Branch office customer service departments offer promotional items including pens and notepads.
  • NMPP Energy provides its member utilities with materials to promote Public Power Week in their own communities such as boilerplate press releases, ad slicks and letters to the editor.
  • The city council of Sioux Center, Iowa, will pass a resolution to observe Public Power Week, and Sioux Center Municipal Utilities plans to run ads in local papers announcing the observance.
