California wind farm uses renewable resources on public land

As of 1999, the Tehachapi Wind Resource area is the largest wind energy project in the world, producing as much wind energy as the rest of the United States combined. More than 4,600 wind turbines in the Tehachapi area are located on both public and private land. These wind turbines collectively generate 1.4 billion kilowatthours of electricity per year.

It is estimated that Tehachapi's wind plants reduce the emission of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and related particulates by 7 million pounds annually, and reduce more than a billion pounds of greenhouse gas emission each year.

Thousands of people from around the world visit Tehachapi's wind powerplants for a vision of the future. Hikers can enjoy visiting several wind energy "farms" situated on the Pacific Crest Trail, about seven miles east of Tehachapi.
