Creative marketing draws power partners to 'green'

Utilities across California are marketing "green" power alternatives in a number of creative ways. Here are several examples of how Western customers are promoting renewables.

PV Buydown Program

Roseville Electric's new photovoltaic systems buydown program helps customers offset the cost of purchasing and installing a PV system while quietly generating their own pollution-free energy.

Roseville's incentive is based on the rated AC generating capacity of the PV system measured in watts. Rebates are $5 per watt for systems up to 5,000 watts. Maximum rebate per customer is $25,000.

The rebate incentive is available on a first-come, first-served basis to customers who own their home and abide by the PV Program terms and conditions, install a qualifying PV system, and enter into an interconnection agreement with Roseville Electric.

Customers who miss the chance to cash in on the utility's PV buydown program can take advantage of the California Energy Commission's Photovoltaic System Buydown incentive program for a limited time. The CEC program offers $4.50 per watt for qualifying PV systems.

Green Energy Program

Roseville Electric offers its customers three options to purchase green energy.

RE-Green 50: Power is generated from 50 percent renewable energy sources. The cost is an additional half cent per kWh or $2.50 per month based on usage of 500 kWh per month.

RE-Green100: Electricity comes from 100 percent renewable energy sources. For one cent per kWh or $5 more per month based on electricity usage of 500 kWh per month, Roseville Electric meets customer electric usage requirements from all natural sources.

RE-New Green Fund: By signing up for this program, customers contribute to a fund used to build new, environmentally preferred renewable energy systems in the city of Roseville. Funds from this program will be used to install solar-electric systems in public facilities such as municipal buildings and schools. Contributors to the RE-New Green Fund donate one cent per kWh or just $5 per month more, based on electricity usage of 500 kWh per month.

When customers subscribe to the RE-New Green Fund in addition to either the RE-Green 100 or RE-Green 50 funds, Roseville Electric will match contributions to all its green energy programs dollar for dollar.

Under Roseville's green energy program, customers can switch back to standard service at any time. All three renewable energy products are certified by the California Energy Commission.

SMUD customers get a jolt of java

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District gives its Greenergy members a real jolt with its Starbucks "give a little, get a latté" promotion.

When customers sign up for SMUD's Greenergy Team before May 31, they receive a $15 Starbucks Card. Greenergy Team members pay $6 or $3 more per month on their energy bills to support renewable energy sources. Depending on customer commitment, SMUD matches either 100 percent or 50 percent of Greenergy Team members' electricity needs with power from renewables.
