Summer heat highlights importance of energy efficiency

As thermometers across the West turned red this summer and stubbornly stayed that way, utilities scrambled to make limited energy capacity go as far as possible. And they used a technique with which Western customers have a long history: reducing energy loads. To avoid rolling blackouts, utilities asked customers to use energy carefully and avoid peak use. But Western's customers have been helping end-users use energy more efficiently for years.

In fact, our Energy Services Program has its roots in energy efficiency. It started life as the "Conservation and Renewable Energy Program." The industry has changed, and so has our program. It's expanded to new areas. But the importance of energy efficiency has remained.

Today, Western continues to help customers encourage energy efficiency. We do it in many ways:

  • Western's equipment loan program gives utilities the tools measure the efficiency of their systems. They also use the equipment to help their end-users find and correct inefficiencies.
  • We offer technical assistance, including peer matches and workshops, to help our customers increase efficiency. Topics range from motor efficiency to energy-efficient building design, infrared camera use, and how to conduct energy audits
  • Our Power Line telephone hotline (800-769-3756) and our Energy Services Web (www.wapa.gov/es) site bring expert advice and extensive energy information resources to our customers every day.

Energy efficiency remains vital to meet growing energy needs. But our customers have also been exploring the potential of renewable resources and distributed generation to keep customers' computers, motors, and air conditioners operating when demand spikes--like during the dog days of simmering southwestern sunshine.

Western's Renewable Resourcess Program helps our customers assess and use renewable resources. We provide information on funding and technologies. We continue to help customers meet growing demands through increased efficiency and renewable resources.

It is really important to all of us that energy efficiency and load management continues to be a strong components to our energy resources. We cannot afford not to!
