California utilities contribute to communities

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District isn't the only California utility to make significant community contributions. Here are a few others.

Pasadena Water and Power
Electric vehicles whispering along Pasadena streets can plug in to a number of charging sites, thanks to Pasadena Water and Power. The utility has installed both inductive and conductive chargers throughout the city.

The utility also uses a fleet of electric vehicles for meter reading and customer service, as well as promoting the environmentally friendly technology through a series of rebates. PWP provides a rebate on both the lease of an EV and on charger installation costs. But autos cars aren't the only electric vehicles on city streets. PWP and other city departments have sponsored an electric-assist bicycle program for the Police Department and Parking Enforcement.

Anaheim Public Utilities
Students interested in utility industry engineering careers can gain work experience and scholarships through the Anaheim Public Utilities Engineering Fellowship Program. The program is open to high school seniors and first- and second-year college students. Recipients get a $4,000 annual fellowship award, a part-time internship in map of Southern Californiaconservation and energy management, underground electrical system design, or electric transmission and distribution. Utility personnel also serve as career mentors for participants.

Anaheim residents enrolled in an engineering program, who qualify for financial aid and have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better, are eligible. They must also be available to work a part-time internship of 300 hours per year.

Riverside Public Utilities
Riverside libraries will have an upgraded checkout system, thanks to Riverside Public Utilities. RPU donated some older personal computers to the libraries, allowing them to upgrade systems at a low cost and buy other electronic equipment.

The libraries bought Terminal Emulator software to convert the PCs to library terminals, with library-specific hot keys. The software also enables the computers to work with the libraries' digital environment. The new terminals will have barcode scanners that replace the "wands" currently used by library staff.

"When Riverside Public Utilities upgraded some of its computers, we decided to put the older PCs where they could be put to good use and help out the city, rather than have them go to waste somewhere," said Donna Stevener, chief financial officer for RPU.
