First year of Nebraska wind program successful

The winds of Nebraska's Great Plains churned out more than 3 million kilowatthours of electricity at two wind turbines near Springview, Neb., in 1999.

"That's enough electricity to power 35 percent of the (Keya Paha) County's energy requirements," according to KBR Rural Public Power District General Manager Rich Walters. KBR is responsible for frontline operation and maintenance of the turbines.

Six Nebraska utilities worked together to bring the turbines online. They include the Nebraska Public Power District, KBR, Lincoln Electric System, NMPP Energy, and the cities of Grand Island and Auburn. The project received additional funding from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and EPRI.
