EarthFair 2000 to celebrate Earth Day in Washington, D.C. When an event enlists a star such as actor Leonardo DiCaprio, it's sure to draw some attention. DiCaprio will serve as chair for EarthFair 2000 on the Mall in Washington, D.C., April 22. That's Earth Day, and EarthFair 2000 is the highest-profile event in the national observance. With a theme of "Clean Energy Now!" EarthFair 2000 will showcase renewable energy technologies. Sun, wind, geothermal heat, and water will power exhibits at a series of energy pavilions. The pavilions will feature "hands-on" activities designed to be child-friendly. Earth Day offers opportunity for utilities With this year's Earth Day theme focusing on clean energy, utilities can use the day to promote their sustainable energy programs. Many communities nationwide hold Earth Day events, giving utilities a forum to show ways in which they contribute to a better environment. Participating in or sponsoring a local event demonstrates that the utility places value on clean technologies. In 1999, for example, Lincoln Electric System in Nebraska tied the dedication of its first wind turbine to Earth Day. In a ceremony held April 23, LES Administrator and CEO Terry Bundy said, "In a poignant way, this wind turbine stands as a symbol of the commitment of our customers to the Earth Day cause." Board Chair Ken Ward added, "The addition of our Renewable Energy Program, and this wind generator, is another one of those things that is going right. It's right because it's something our customers wanted, and LES responded to their needs." The utility's Earth Day celebration included tours of the wind turbine site for program participants, as well as the general public.
