DOE seeks partners to expand 'Wind for Schools' activities
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Wind and Hydropower Technologies Program and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) request proposals to expand Wind Powering America's Wind for Schools activities to an additional three to six states. This opportunity provides universities, state institutions and non-governmental organizations with funding and technical support to develop educational programs to improve the understanding of wind technology and its implementation using the successful Wind for Schools model. SMUD and regional partners win $127.5 million in federal grant money
Customers of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) will realize the benefits of a “smart grid,” thanks to the award of a Federal grant totaling more than $127.5 million. SMUD and its local partners will use the U.S. Department of Energy funds to install a comprehensive regional smart grid system extending from transmission to the customer. Read more.
DOE launches online resource to help local governments expand solar use
The U.S. DOE has created a new online resource for local governments to assist community leaders and local stakeholders in building sustainable local solar markets. The online publication, Solar Powering Your Community: A Guide for Local Governments, provides local governments with proven best practices enabling them to drive economic development, support clean energy jobs and reduce carbon emissions by building a robust local solar market. Western purchases renewable energy certificates
Through the Renewable Resources for Federal Agencies program, Western has purchased renewable energy certificates to help meet renewable energy goals set by the Energy Policy Act of 2005. 3 Degrees, Unicoi Energy Services, LLC and NextEra Energy Resources will supply Western with approximately 11,486 RECs in 2009; 50,000 RECs in 2010; and 1,372 RECs in each year from 2011 to 2015.
