Environmental Management System

Western’s Environmental Management System establishes processes and procedures for meeting the commitments in our environmental policy, managing our environmental program and encouraging continuous improvement.

Western’s EMS complies with all applicable Federal requirements and the International Standards for Environmental Management Systems described by ISO 14001:1996(E). It also meets the criteria of Executive Order 13148, Greening the Government Through Leadership in Environmental Management, and DOE Order 450.1, the Environmental Protection Program, that require Federal facilities to implement EMSs, as well as the Code of Environmental Management Principles for Federal Facilities.

The International Standard methodology describes what will be accomplished, how and by whom. The Plan-Do-Check-Act model also provides for benchmarking and process improvement:

Plan: Establish the objectives and processes necessary to deliver results following the organization’s environmental policy.

Do: Implement the processes.

Check: Monitor and measure processes against environmental policy, objectives and targets, legal and other requirements, and report the results.

Act: Take actions to continually improve the performance of the environmental management system.

See Western's EMS Handbook for the complete outline of the systematic processes that guide our environmental program.
